Dating to the 1970s and created by Shirley Cobham, this beautiful Pan Am travelogue film focuses on the islands of the Caribbean also called “the Eighth Continent”, although excluding Cuba which was under embargo at the time. The film features gorgeous footage of the many activities affiliated with the Caribbean: sailing, fishing, swimming and lounging activities at the beach. At 4:00, the film visits St. Georges, Grenada and shows the quaint downtown and historic waterfront. At 5:40 is the island of Saint Thomas and Charlotte Amalie. St. Thomas is the gateway isle of the U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. It’s known for its beaches and snorkeling spots. Puerto Rico is seen at 7:30 including the fortress Castillo San Felipe del Morro. At 10:00 is the island of Martinique with its largest town, Fort-de-France, featuring steep hills, narrow streets and La Savane, a garden bordered by shops and cafes. This French colony is where Napoleon’s future bride Josephine grew up and where Paul Gaugin began his artistic bloom.
