50324 STORY OF PRESIDENT FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT FDR “THE GREATEST DRAMA”

This episode of the 1950s TV series The Greatest Drama tells the story of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The episode begins with FDR reading the United Nations declaration in 1942. It then shows the Hyde Park mansion (01:27) where he was born and raised. Photographs show FDR as a child, Harvard’s campus, and FDR with Eleanor. A young FDR is elected to the New York state senate (02:08); the young state senator smiles for the camera. The episode then shows the exterior of Presbyterian Hospital in New York City (02:39). Later, FDR rehabs by swimming in a pool in Warm Springs, GA (02:58). FDR, recently elected governor of New York, sits at a desk (03:14). FDR secures the democratic presidential nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1932 (03:30). There are scenes of FDR campaigning at rallies and from the back of a train car. He addresses a crowd of supporters on election night (04:15). After winning the election, FDR rides with Herbert Hoover to the inauguration (04:38), where FDR gives his “nothing to fear but fear itself” speech. FDR sits at his desk and signs bills into law (05:16), creating jobs and bringing the U.S. out of the depression. At Hyde Park in 1936 (06:15) FDR vacations with his grandkids and takes a ride on a sailboat. Footage from World War II shows Europe being bombed by the Nazis; Asian refugees flee Japanese forces; Benito Mussolini walks with his men; and Nazi troops march on the streets of a European city (07:27). FDR is sworn in for a third term (07:38). Winston Churchill meets with FDR on the U.S. cruiser USS Augusta (07:53). FDR speaks to congress, and the U.S. declares war on Japan following the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Footage shows America’s new armament plants (09:15). Churchill and FDR talk in Casa Blanca in January 1943 (09:42). In Cairo, FDR meets with Chiang Kai-shek of China; he then meets with Joseph Stalin in Tehran in late 1943. FDR rides through New York City in a rainstorm (10:08). FDR is sworn in as president during his fourth inauguration. The last scene of FDR that the episode shows before his death is of FDR at the Yalta Conference. This is followed by footage of his funeral procession (11:12); mourners line the streets and cry, bidding farewell to the late president.
