48974 1953 U.S. ARMY FOURTH ARMY CHEMICAL DEFENSE SCHOOL FLAMETHROWER & BAZOOKA DEMONSTRATION

This color, silent movie footage features members of the Fourth Army conducting weapons training and testing. This was shot in 1953 in and around Camp Bullis, Texas, and the Fourth Army Chemical Defense School.

Opening: Camera slate – 4th Army Signal Corps, March 1953 (:11). Servicemen exit a building and walk by a sign that reads: Fourth Army Chemical Defense School (:23). A soldier wires a detonator and turns the detonator; colored smoke emits from a marker canister (:46). Smoke bombs send smoke out as servicemen watch from bleacher seats (1:38). Colored smoke plumes (2:27). Men in the bleachers watch a table that contains several small smoke bombs that emit smoke and sparks (3:51). A man lights a wick to a canister and leaves it on the ground, it shoots off sparks and smoke (4:18). A soldier demonstrates a flamethrower, he takes it off and then puts it on (5:08). The man uses the flamethrower (5:34). A soldier demonstrates how to use a bazooka rocket launcher (5:51). A rocket is fired and there is an explosion; men approach and shoot off flamethrowers (6:16). A soldier gets a 16mm motion picture camera ready on a tripod (6:57). Camera slate – 4th Army Signal, March 1953 (7:30). A huge explosion followed by an orange flame that burns (7:45). Servicemen are taught as they listen from bleacher seats (8:25). A smoke bomb sends white smoke out of a canister (8:49). Servicemen watch from bleacher seats as their instructor is shrouded by smoke (9:57). Colored smoke plumes (10:24). A smoking flame emits sparks on the ground (11:04). A man with a flamethrower walks by; he fires out the flame and demonstrates (11:20). A tiny explosion sends dirt and dust into the air (11:47). A small group of metal and a big canister, looks like junk, explode (12:07). Men use flamethrowers on the ground (12:33). Servicemen leave their bleacher seats and walk away (12:58). The men walk back in a march (13:48). A sign that reads: Fourth Army Chemical Defense School (14:18).

Camp Bullis Military Training Reservation is a U.S. Army training camp in Bexar County, Texas, USA, just northwest of San Antonio. Camp Bullis and Camp Stanley make up the Leon Springs Military Reservation. Camp Bullis is used primarily as maneuvering grounds for U.S. Army, Air Force and Marines combat units. It is also utilized as a field training site for the various medical units stationed at Brooke Army Medical Center in nearby Fort Sam Houston.
