48524 WWII U.S. NAVY IWO JIMA ATTACK INDUSTRIAL INCENTIVE FILM YOUR MISTAKE TOKYO

Dating to 1945, this industrial incentive film YOUR MISTAKE TOKYO was intended to sell war bonds and encourage American workers to do their part for the war effort. The film begins with a re-enactment of Japanese broadcasters on Radio Tokyo denying the American victory in the Second Battle of Philippine Sea. Like a Tokyo Rose, the announcer claims the Pacific fleet has been annihilated.

At 1:05, the China Sea is shown and the U.S. Navy’s fleet is shown at sea. US Navy Admiral Halsey (1:38)’s 3rd Fleet is shown in action off Cameron Bay, Saigon, Hong Kong etc. Gun camera footage shows the bombing & strafing of factories, ships, warehouses, and Japanese planes being destroyed in the air and on the ground (2:40).

At 2:49, Admiral Raymond Spruance is shown with the 5th Fleet along with Admiral Mark Mitscher, the commander of fast carrier fleet. Pilots briefed about hitting a Japanese aircraft factory (3:22).

At 3:38 crews are seen fueling, loading bombs & ammunition while the briefing continues and the announcement “pilots man your planes” is made.

At 4:10 jet assisted takeoff allows Corsairs and other heavily laden aircraft to take off from carrier on bombing mission to Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya – including a lot of coverage of the harbor being hit with rockets and gunfire via gun camera footage.

At 5:39, animation shows waves of aircraft flying over Japan. At 5:57, Marines are shown landing on Iwo Jima. At 6:00, Admiral Halsey speaks about the Japanese soldier: “He’s tough, he’s vicious, he’s treacherous. As we get further & further towards his homeland he’s going to dig deeper & deeper into the hole; and we re going to have to root deeper & deeper to get him out. We have one job to do, and that is to exterminate him wherever he is; and believe me we are going to do the job.”

The End.
