48154 CONQUEST: GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE 20TH CENTURY BIRTH OF THE MOVIES ALBERT EINSTEIN

This black and white mid-1950s television show was part of the “Conquest” series, which in season two looked at “Great Achievements of the 20th Century.” A montage of achievements are shown. Early 1900s women punch a time clock dressed in long blouses, skirts, and updos, followed by dancing (1:38-2:04). A crowd gathers outside a Nickelodeon. A one-cent post advertises Billy West in The Absent Minded Janitor and Ham and Bud in The Sausage Factory. A hand inserts a penny into the slot of a flicker machine. 1903, the Edison Company produced The Great Train Robbery, a silent motion picture (2:06-3:45). A man jumps on a tightrope, followed by a woman with a parasol (3:46-4:00). The 1910s featured Vaudeville singer Lillian Russel, Flora Finch, and John Bunny (4:02-4:23). Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders ride into town (4:25-4:32). 1955, a woman dials a rotary telephone connected to two Bell Labs video screens to demonstrate the first videophone (4:42-4:54). 1901, Marconi sends the first radio transmission across the Atlantic. Western Union workers type messages, Shown are radio towers, electrical transformers, a room of large generators, and power lines (4:55-6:10). 1903, Madame Currie investigates radiation therapy. A patient has radium applied to a spot on her leg by a doctor and nurse (6:12-7:04). Albert Einstein is shown in 1921 at Princeton (7:05-7:39). Fish, sheep, and mine are fed radioactive materials (7:40-7:59). 1942, scientists at Chicago Pile Number One work with atomic energy as part of The Manhattan Project. Uranium is shown being inserted into the pile as part of the process of creating plutonium. A ‘Danger Neutron and Gamma Rays’ sign hangs above a scientist who is using hand-controlled arms to mechanically move the container holding it (8:00-9:33). 1953, The cosmotron particle accelerator and the largest electromagnet are shown at Brookhaven. The first million-volt experiment is shown on oscilloscopes. Radium is openly handled by doctors and nurses for radiation treatment (9:34-10:51). 1954, the USS Nautilus nuclear-powered submarine launches (10:53-11:18). 1917, shown are Red Square, England’s George V in a processional, and General Pershing reviewing troops (12:05-12:38). 1920s, a man roller skates and a couple dance on small tall platforms. Alvin “Shipwreck” Kelly pole sits. William Greenwood builds an ark in Olympia (13:00-13:15). 1929, the Zaschka three-wheeler was a folding car (13:16-13:38). Women model dresses made of wood (13:39-13:50). 1920s race cars race (13:52-14:10). Shown is an early 1900s car with gears, cylinders, vintage footage of cars, and the automobile assembly line. Autos race at the Vanderbilt Cup; Barney Oldfield drives by (14:12-15:44). 1947, John Cobb broke land speed records but dies in 1952 attempting the water speed record (15:45-16:33). Yachts, air boats, and horses race (16:37-16:49). 1923, Jack Dempsey is shown boxing Louis Firpo (16:51-21:54). 1930, Bobby Jones wins the Grand Slam and receives a ticker-tape parade (21:56-22:46). Jessie Owens is shown winning the 100 meter dash at the 1936 Olympics (22:48-24:20).
