47984 KTLA TELEVISION LOS ANGELES TELEVISION SERVES ITS COMMUNITY FILM (long version)

“Television Serves its Community” is a 1960 educational documentary revealing how television programs are prepared for transmission to the homes of a community. It follows three programs at KTLA in Los Angeles as they are planned, rehearsed, and televised. In addition to showing how television programs are prepared for transmission to the homes of a community, it also shows the use of live cameras, film, magnetic tape, and remote pick-ups from trucks and helicopters. At mark 00:45 it is explained how planning for live musical performance begins nearly a week in advance with a series of meetings before writers go to work on a script and a director plans the actual performance. We watch advertising executives at mark 02:09 discuss which sponsors to use, and at mark 2:45 learn about the use of remote broadcasting trucks used to cover events such as live holiday parades as crews prepare cameras and confirm routes. Sunday news roundup programs are featured starting at mark 03:15 as a news director and his staff go over local and national events, and we learn how some events are covered via a special “telecopter” — or news helicopter — shown at mark 03:43.

The film continues featuring scenes from the rehearsal of the dance show (including a live sausage commercial at mark 06:45), additional preparation for the parade, and the news broadcast as learn more about the role of a cameraman in television broadcasts. Polka dancers rush the stage at mark 07:50 for their practice performance, news footage is readied starting at mark 09:13 (while the news chopper takes to the air at mark 10:00), and “Polka Parade” opens at mark 11:25 while we learn how the live program is sent to a transmitter that then broadcasts it to your home. The frenetic pace ends at mark 13:22 as we see shots of the highly anticipated Rose Parade a closing scene of a gigantic clown float making its way down the street.
