47704 “ANCHORAGE TO THE ARCTIC CIRCLE” 1950s TRIP TO NORTHERN ALASKA FAIRBANKS PALMER

This travelogue film by John Hutter (:12) shows a trip from the Anchorage, Alaska to the Arctic Circle. It is hosted by John Hutter, a Chicago based accountant who briefly owned a resort in Wisconsin known as Château Hutter — where he showed films like this one to entertain guests. Hutter opens the feature as he sits by the fireplace as he often does in the opening of his films. (:36). A chalkboard trail is depicted of the route which the film will take (:43) highlighting areas such as Dawson Creek and White Horse. Shops in Palmer such as Sportland and a bowling alley (1:26) are seen along town sidewalks as well as Koslosky’s Liquor Store. A long winding river cuts through the valley (2:05). Snow peaked mountains rise in the background (2:23). A close shot shows a thick glacier shelf (2:42). Vacationers are seen milling about the log cabins used for vacation lodging (3:51). At (4:16) they use his and hers outhouses. A seaplane skims the waters in a picturesque shot as the mountains are mirrored in the water (5:10). Two men check over their kill from a hunting expedition (6:01). A close shot shows the bear’s teeth (6:05). A car drives down a dirt road to a mountain with a snowy peak (7:40). A servicemen in a brown uniform walks through Fairbanks passing a café (8:01). The popular grocery store; Piggly Wiggly follows (8:14) as well as Monsey’s Pantorium Cleaners. A Silver Dollar cab (8:32) is seen. A traditional log cabin proceeds modern apartment homes (9:09). Two men return from a quail hunt (9:22). Signs decry the taking of Caribou at a fish and wildlife preserve (9:27). Other members of the group check out signs about hunting regulations in the area (9:41). Alaskan husky puppies follows (10:20). Men carry containers of water by pole (10:36). Youth pull eggs from a basket (10:47). This film was produced by John Hutter at Sturgeon Bay (11:23).
