47524 JERUSALEM THE SACRED CITY 1960 TRAVELOGUE MOVIE ISRAEL MIDDLE EAST

This 1960 color film about Jerusalem is part of “The Land of the Bible” series, a Family Films Production. It highlights different religions but makes many references specifically to Jesus. The film opens with a view of Jerusalem from a distance that moves into the stone walls. A young boy walks down the slope next to a large stone wall. The city on the hill is panned from multiple angles to include the Islamic Dome of the Rock (:14-2:15). Priests walk in a processional, followed by pilgrims carrying candles and torches as they walk to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher (Sepulchre). Inside the Church, the candlelit faces of old people and children are shown in prayer (2:16-3:38). The walls surrounding Jerusalem are panned. Young boys run and play on the top of a wall (3:39-4:55). Tourist policemen (the name the boy gives them) tell them to come down, and a uniformed officer dressed in khakis and what looks like a British tropical helmet is shown up-close (4:56-5:23). Two boys play a game trying to crack each other’s hard-boiled egg (5:24-5:59). The boy walks through narrow shadow streets with bursts of light (6:00-6:55). A potter makes a fluted vase on a wheel that is hand-turned using his feet (6:56-7:34). He buys baklava pastries off a large tray from a street vendor (7:35-8:08). The boy and his friends play a game where they bounce a ball off the wall only using their heads (8:09-8:39). The Via Dolorosa has arches over it (8:40-9:15). The Pool of Siloam still remains in its ancient form (9:16-10:00). People walk through the Damascus Gate. St. Stephen’s Gate is shown (10:01-11:05). The boy walks next to the Wailing Wall, which is made of individual square-cut large stones (11:06-11:35). He walks over to the Dome of the Rock, which is panned on the outside. Shown close-up are the lower marble wall and the upper tiles on the wall (11:36-12:42). The boy walks down into tombs cut into stone caves such as Jesus was placed in. He shows a large heavy round stone that could be rolled to block the entrance (12:43-13:12). Different church steeples are shown, as are St. George’s Cathedral and the Church of All Nations with its detailed painting on the front (13:13-14:24). The Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives is shown from a distance and up-close. (14:25-15:00). Golden clouds float about the various steeples in Jerusalem at sunset (15:15-15:42).
