47264 SS PRESIDENT CLEVELAND 1950s CRUISE TO HAWAII, PHILIPPINES, HONG KONG & JAPAN

This 1950s color travelogue about travelling on the SS President Cleveland was filmed during an actual voyage by actors Wanda Wirth, Walter Kelley, Alexa Palmer, and Lawrence Paquin (also the narrator) as an Alfred T. Palmer production. The ship’s horn blows. The American President Lines entry is retracted. A pretty woman waves to those on the dock covered in streamers. She almost loses her 1950s hat with face netting. The ship passes under the San Francisco Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge. Wanda and Walter stand next to the SS President Cleveland life flotation ring (:35-2:10). Various shots of the ocean liner are shown (2:12-2:46). A couple is silhouetted against the ship’s railing on a moonlit night (2:48). Drinks are served, the captain plays ‘heaving the donut’, others play paddle tennis and shuffleboard (2:55-4:00). Women in 1950s bathing suits are by the pool (4:06-4:40). Others relax in deck chairs (4:43). Fingers play an accordion, bass, and saxophone (4:54-5:10). Diamond Head and Honolulu are seen. On-shore they are greeted with leis (5:31-5:48). The precipice overlooks Nuuanu Pali and coral reefs (6:08-6:26). Polynesian women perform the Hula (6:43-7:00). Surfers and outrigger canoes ride the waves (7:02-7:35). Sailors hang from mast rigging and polish the bell (7:50-8:22). The beauty shop offers facials, hair styling, and manicures. A woman sits under a 1950s metal hairdryer. A man gets an electric razor cut from an elderly barber (8:25-8:48). A woman shops and another tries on a coat in the gift shop (8:50-9:20). Photos are taken with 1950s cameras (9:22-9:35). The rotary telephone on the dresser rings (9:38-9:48). A couple read in the library; others sit at writing desks (9:50-10:00). Oriental men play Mahjong, women play bridge, and men smoking pipes play poker (10:06-10:57). At 10:51 a man’s eyes literally pop out of his head. Children play at a party (10:58-11:24). Children climb into a spinning seat (11:25-11:49). Walter is seen yelling from the shower (12:34). A crewman puts laundry into a bin. A tablecloth is fed into a large iron and shirts are ironed by hand and boxed (12:44-13:20). Wanda puts on earrings to match her 1950s sleeveless dinner dress (13:23) They join friends for cocktails (13:41). A mixer whips cream, shown being piped onto a cake replica of the ship (14:34). A steward makes crepe suzettes (15:02). The ship arrives in Manilla (16:45-17:05). Intramural Philippines is in ruins (17:09-17:28) They visit Quiapo Church with its Spanish architecture and Santo Tomas (18:00-18:33). They walk through the Tondo Market (18:52). Men carry baskets on a long pole past a double-decker bus. Rickshaws provide transportation (19:29-19:47). A Chinese funeral procession passes (19:57-20:17). A craftsman hand-carves a camphor wood chest (20:23-20:39). Tiger Balm Park Hong Kong shows colorful statues (20:50-21:10). They kneel at Nikko Japan (21:45-22:30). People in coolie hats hand-harvest rice. The Festival of Thanksgiving celebrates the harvest with monks, children in costume, and colorfully dressed street performers (22:35-23:58). The SS Cleveland is shown at dock (24:12). A costume party followed by formal clothing dancing are shown on-board (24:24-26:00). Party hats are worn at the Captain’s Dinner (26:04-26:42).
