47144 CLASSIC 1950s MARRIAGE & RELATIONSHIP EDUCATIONAL FILM “MARRIAGE: TODAY”

One of a series of films based on texts by Henry Bowman called Marriage for Moderns, this campy 1950s film “Marriage: Today” is full of unintentional comedy. Featuring some ridiculously backwards ideas about what a healthy relationship is, and how young couples can build lasting marriages by a clear analysis of their mutual aims and cooperation in achieving them. One couple in the film, university graduates, have many interests in common. The other couple, a business man and a teacher, center their mutual affection on their son. The film is set in post-WWII America, where the post-war recession caused unemployment and great uncertainty — thus the beginning of the film is about this “difficult” situation.

At mark 1:37, is a home, a home filled with smiles and love. At mark 2:25, is America’s home today, slums and trailer parks. At 2:46, men are seen aboard a Pullman car, going off to WWII. An age of confused personal ideas adding up to a series of broken homes. At 3:16, a welfare relief line is seen. How can one resolve into living in a home in atmosphere of despair and chaos? A world where ambition is covered between inflation and deflations. It’s a tough world this world young people’s are suppose to inherit.

At mark 4:20 we see a marriage ceremony, ceremony of culture. At mark 4:40, the couple are seen on a roof top. As seen at mark 5:00. Here is a lady with his ambitions and future. At mark 10:25, the husband is grilling for his wife. At mark 11:13, they are on a canoe. At mark 11:35, they drive back home. The way he treats her makes him a better man even at his workplace. At mark 12:25, is another family. Here the wife talks about liking her husband. At mark 12:50, the lady talks to herself. She likes her husband whether he is busy or troubled, she likes him and this makes her happy. She is never tired of liking her husband and with this they never drift far apart. A guy that prefers a pretty girl to a beautiful woman has got an awful lot to learn.

At mark 16:00 is another family, here; the wife talks about Jack her husband. She helps her husband with her work which involves math and he still respects her with his work. At mark 17:30, Jack comes home and the wife goes to the clinic for ante-natal. He encourages his wife with advices and all.

At mark 20:20 are unexpected visits and situations, but these couples with their matured minds handles them together. In modern marriages, no one is the boss, and no one who is ride and no slaves.
