This 1962 United States Navy training film, produced by the Jamieson Film Company, is titled “Vision In Military Aviation” The Sense Of Sight” and opens with jet fighters launching from the deck of an aircraft carrier as the narrator explains how military pilots must rely on all of their senses to successfully operate an aircraft. The sense of sight, however, is the most important. From reading charts and instrument panels to identifying targets on the ground, the importance of proper vision is stressed throughout this color film. At mark 02:44, the narrator lectures the viewer on the “process of seeing” and how we see, including light discrimination, visual acuity, and spatial discrimination (all three of which are performed by our eyes simultaneously). Starting at mark 03:22, the narrator details each vision function as illustrations and film footage illustrate the narratives. Mark 04:29 we examine the structure of the human eye (again using illustrations) accurately comparing its structure to that of a camera. The viewer learns of the link between proper nutrition (and the importance of Vitamin A levels) starting at mark 09:00 as the narrator continues a discussion of light discrimination while flying at night, twilight, or daytime. Mark 12:00 begins an in-depth discussion of visual acuity (with another look at the structure of our eyes) and spatial discrimination.”Together these functions make up the complex physiological process of vision,” the narrator reminds the viewer at mark 19:57, as another illustration drives home the point. As the film continues, the training film also reminds pilots (at mark 21:40) of the various physical forces that may impact vision during flight, including g-forces, and the danger of fatigue and overexposure to sunlight, which may impact night flying.
