46914 1940 NORTHERN NEW MEXICO TRAVELOGUE ” LAND OF THE PUEBLOS ” PUEBLO INDIANS

This 1940 color documentary about northern New Mexico is produced by World Travel Films. A Pueblo woman in native dress prepares a fire outdoors in a dome-shaped horno oven made of adobe. She carries pre-made bread dough to the oven and inserts it on a paddle. The finished bread is shown up-close (:08-:52). Ears of maize hang in loops (1:03). The Santa Clara Pueblo reservation is represented by houses and a mission (1:15-1:52). A man building a house pours a mixture of mud and straw and stacks dried adobe bricks to form walls (1:53-2:25). Pueblo Indian girls sit on the ground and sell pottery to tourists (2:26-3:13). Houses and the kiva (ceremonial chamber) is shown at Pueblo de San Ildefonso (3:15-3:40). Indian women pray at a temporary shrine prepared for the celebration of the Corn Dance, which asks for rain. Native men in traditional costume chant and dance as native women wear a ceremonial headdress and dance barefoot. They all wave spruce boughs. The skies grow dark (3:41-5:30). Buildings shown in Santa Fe include the St. Francis Cathedral, Palace of the Governor, the Old San Miguel Mission, and the ‘oldest house in USA’. The post office is built in the Pueblo style to match the historic buildings (5:31-7:10). A view down College Street is shown (7:16). A granite memorial marks the Plaza (7:25-7:33). The Le Fonda Hotel is on the Plaza. It has an open patio where a family sits. An Indian sells silver and turquoise jewelry at a table, some shown up close (7:35-8:37). Women walk on a path through flowers, including an up-close view of dahlias (8:38-9:00). An effigy of Zozobra is hung up and burned as part of a celebration (9:01-9:45). As part of the Fiesta parade, conquistadores march on horseback, the Queen of the Fiesta walks by with her entourage, and a musician plays a fiddle. Crowds mingle in the streets (9:46-10:14). A sign points to Bishops Lodge, built around the Chapel of Archbishop Lamy (10:15-10:39). Horses are rounded up for trail riding by ranch hands at a corral. Packing gear is loaded on horses. A line of horseback riders on a rocky mountainside pass the camera. They set up tents and cook a meal in metal pots. A metal coffee pot is placed into the fire. Steaks are cooked on a grill directly over the fire. A fisherman fishes in a fast flowing steam with rocks sticking up. The pack horses cross through the stream (10:40-11:57). The El Santuario de Chimayo Chapel is shown from different angles (12:02-12:34). Chimayo Spanish weavers display large colorful wool blankets (12:35-13:13). Red chili peppers hang drying on an adobe house in Cordova (13:14-13:42). The mountainside of yellow golden Aspen leaves are shown. Multiple Aspen trees are shown up-close (13:50-14:42). Snow skiers walk through the mountain snow. One waxes his skis before skiing down the hill. A woman in black falls as she skis and laughs at the camera (14:45-16:25). A Santa Fe Railroad train passes the camera (16:26-16:55
