Lifetime Protection is a short promotional film presented by The Dow Chemical Company and produced by the Atlas Film Corporation (likely from the 1950s) that touts the easy and economical aspects of using Styrofoam boards to insulate homes. The film opens with a shot of a convertible car sitting in front of a brick home (00:35). An approaching thunder storm prompts a man to run out of the house to put the car’s top up as the narrator explains the importance of protection from cold and moisture. In a family room, a father reads a newspaper as his wife looks over his shoulder and the couple’s son and daughter play on the floor next to the fireplace (01:28). In an office, a man shows a couple a model home (01:48) and explains the built-in comfort of Styrofoam insulation. A closeup shot of a Styrofoam sample shows the cellular structure of the product (03:40). Styrofoam is tested in a lab for insulation properties including thermal insulation using ASTM procedures (04:19), waterproof ability (05:30), and structural strength (06:16). The film discusses Styrofoam’s established use in the food industry while featuring shots of an Oscar Mayer facility (07:05), Oscar Mayer trucks, and Oscar Mayer products on display in a grocery store (07:18). A truck brings residential foam insulation boards to a jobsite (07:58). The film then demonstrates the horizontal and vertical methods of installing Styrofoam boards for insulating the foundation of a home (09:02; 10:13). There are additional shots of builders placing foam boards on foundations. Workmen apply insulation to masonry walls (12:28), bonding foam boards to walls using a push box. Men apply a cut foam board around an electrical outlet box (14:10); insulating around ducts and windows is handled the same way. A demonstration shows how to prepare foam installation when there is a later need to mount fixtures such as a drapery (16:08). Plaster is applied directly to the foam boards (17:10), saving builders time and money. The film shows other FHA-approved methods for insulating with foam boards, including insulating monolithic walls (17:35) and cavity walls (17:50). The film concludes with a shot of a couple walking up the sidewalk to “a home with lifetime protection.”
