The Grand Canyon in Northern Arizona, is a promotional, color, film of the Grand Canyon for the Santa Fe Railroad. The Santa Fe Railroad was built in 1882 to carry ore from East to West. The spur, called the Grand Canyon Railway, was built in 1901. This line was shut down in 1968 due to the popularity of cars; therefore, this film was probably made in the late 1950’s.

Intro (0:11-0:32). The movie opens with a cowboy riding a horse along the edge of the Grand Canyon and then looking out across the canyon (0:33-0:53). The beauty of the Canyon’s south rim and then a storm goes through. A rainbow over the Canyon (0:54-1:44). The Canyon in winter. The Canyon is 4-18 miles wide and 1 mile deep (1:45-2:41). An aerial view of the railroad, the Grand Canyon Village, and the South Rim of the Canyon beyond (2:42-4:03). The El Tovar, the Fred Harvey Hotel, established 1905 (4:36-4:58). The Hopi House, built in 1904 (4:59-5:06). Bright Angel Lodge and Cabins, designed by architect Mary Jane Colter, built in 1935 (5:07-5:51). Tour buses take visitors on tours of the canyon. Picturesque Scenes of the canyon and the Colorado River (5:52-6:40). Tour bus to National Park Observation station and Museum at Yavapai Point, now called the Yavapai Geology Museum, which was built July, 1928 and designed by architect Herbert C. Maier (6:41-7:07). Colors change in the Grand Canyon in the afternoon light (7:08-8:07). The Desert View Watchtower or Indian Watchtower at Desert View , built in 1932, designed by Mary Colter. Views from the tower showing the Canyon and the Painted Dessert beyond (8:08-9:26). Hopi Indian Dances at the Hopi House (9:27-9:53). To see the bottom of the Canyon, ride a Fred Harvey Mule, which were used from 1904-1968 (9:54- 10:11). Arial views of the Colorado River and the trail taken by the mules (10:12-11:26). Mules take you down the Kaibab Trail. Views from above of their decent. Rocky rail down on mule back (11:27-13:41). Along the trail you see Yucca plant, flowering prickly pear cactus, desert daisies (13:14-13:42). Back on the trail (13:43-14:48). They cross the Kaibab suspension bridge, built in 1928, at the bottom and head for Phantom Ranch (14:49-14:58). Phantom Ranch, built in 1922, is comprised of overnight cabins, a beautiful pool, and horse shoes (14:59-15:45). They visit Bright Angel Canyon and see the Roaring Springs (15:46-16:17). Taking the Bright Angel trail, they head for the top. Scenes of the Colorado River in route (15:46-17:06). Eat a picnic at Indian Gardens on the way up. Deer are seen (17:07-17:32). On the trail again up Jacob’s Ladder, the steepest part of the trail (17:33-19:08). Pictures of more remote Havasu Canyon (19:09-20:06). Magnificent views of the Canyon (20:07-20:30).
