45274 NORTHWEST AIRLINES 1950s ALASKA ESKIMOS AIR ADVENTURE TRAVELOGUE

Arctic Four Allure is a documentary film on the Eskimos of Kotzeube, Alaska and their lifestyle. It was probably made in early to mid-1950 as a promotional for Wein Alaska Airlines. The film was promoted by both Northwest Airlines and Wien Alaska Airlines. Northwest Airlines was founded in 1926 by Colonel Lewis Brittin and is still active today under the Delta brand. Wien Alaska Airlines was started in 1927 by Noel and Ralph Wien in Nome, Alaska, and folded in 1985.

The film starts out showing a Boeing 377 Stratocruiser that was first used in 1947 and retired in 1963 (0:10-0:23). The Wien Alaska Airlines aircraft lands on the icy landing field (2:38-2:56). The Eskimos and sled dogs watch as the plane unloads and then leaves again (2:57-3:50). Taking a sled dog ride to the village (3:51-4:05). The village of Kotzeube covered with snow with only roofs showing (4:07-4:19). An Eskimo child coming out of a tunnel entrance to his home (4:19-4:28). Ice fishing using the jigging method (4:35-5:20). Dog sled with a load of sheefish from Kobuk Lake (5:21-5:31). Ski plane taking flight (possibly a Stinson Junior, built by Stinson Aircraft Company) to see the People of the Deer (5:33-6:25). Reindeer sled (sled deer) and domesticated reindeer (6:48-7:58). Hunters return with a load of hair seals and one bearded seal on their dog sled (9:55-11:11). Eskimos with their fur coats watch the spring Ice break up (11:12-11:52). Massive cakes of ice, ice cakes (11:52-12:02). Collecting ice for summer (12:03-12:47). Fishing from shore (12:50-13:11). A tomcod (13:13-13:16). Fishermen going fishing in their Umiak, seal skin boat (13:19-13:31). Bringing in the Gill net with fish and then taking the fish out of the net (13:38-14:30). A Sheefish (14:22-14:29). Fishing for Beluga whales (14:46-16:30). Beaching the Beluga whales (16:39-17:41). Cleaning and butchering the Beluga whales (17:42-19:06). Raw flippers are the favorite piece (19:19-19:38). Drying whale meat (19:42-19:44). Festival time with Eskimo dances (19:47-20:46). Native drums made from the stomach lining of a walrus (20:47-21:10). Women racing with babies on their backs (21:11-21:20). Children using a Jump Board (21:21-21:33). Eskimo girl with a seal life preserver (21:34-21:41). Blanket tossing (21:58-22:38). Eskimo lady putting her baby on her back (22:40-23:01). Eskimo ivory carver making items out of walrus tusk (23:20-24:29). Going on a skin boat, Umiak, ride (24:42-25:56). A pet polar bear cub (26:20-27:24). The ice flows in Kotzebue Sound (27:25-29:03).
