44054 1950s HOME MOVIE ROAD TRIP FROM MARYLAND TO VIRGINIA, PENNSYLVANIA, FLORIDA, SOUTH CAROLINA

This is a home movie showing a family’s trek from Maryland to Florida or, as the title card at the start states, “South of the Mason-Dixon Line”. We don’t know who shot or edited the film, but it includes wonderful title cards throughout. The Mason-Dixon Line is a demarcation line drawn by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon in the late 18th century as part of the resolution of a border dispute involving Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware in the colonial United States. The footage begins in Maryland but quickly changes to sights and scenes from around Colonial Williamsburg. Then the viewer is taken through the Blue Ridge Mountains in Pennsylvania and shown scenes of rural life there. The film ends exploring the pristine Cypress Gardens, Florida and Middleton Place in South Carolina.

Motion picture films don’t last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we’ve worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies — including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you’d like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we’d love to hear from you.
