44014e ” CROSSROADS OF THE PACIFIC A HAWAIIAN CRUISE ” 1930s U.S. NAVY IN HONOLULU HAWAII

This black & white educational film is about a U.S. sailor’s visit to the island of Hawaii. Copyright is circa 1930 and it may very well date to 1934, when the fleet conducted maneuvers in the Pacific and made a visit to Honolulu and Pearl Harbor.

Opening titles: Crossroads Of The Pacific A Hawaiian Cruise, Narrated by Harry Von Zell (:06-:15). United States Navy warships at sea including cruisers and battleships. As water of the Pacific Ocean washes onto the deck of a ship, U.S. sailors run through it. The guns of the U.S. ship are swung into action as the ships maneuver. The guns are fired as part of an exercise. Scout biplanes take off from the battleship (:16-1:39). Numerous guns are fired from various warships and an officer watches the drill with his binoculars. Torpedoes are launched into the water and the guns of the ships continue to fire. The ships head for Hawaii. Captain’s inspection is held as he inspects the mens’ uniforms. Hats off to see hair length. Ship heads for Honolulu, HI (1:40-3:21). Sailors salute and leave the ship to visit paradise. A traditional welcome for the sailors as the local women present them with a lei. One sailor is presented with numerous leis and then kissed by the woman. Waikiki Beach is the destination. Aboard a Honolulu trolley. Sailors walk the beach. Men and women sit on the beach. Sailors use an outrigger boat as they and a few locals ether the water. The outrigger is hit by heavy waves. The sailors go fast in the boat (3:22-5:19). Men surf the high waves. A car brings a group of sailors to a windy park. Sailors fool around in the strong winds (5:20-6:31). Air Patrol birds eye view of Honolulu. Factories and buildings below. Waikiki Beach, hotels on the beach. Volcanoes bubble. Coral reef displays on land. Coconut trees (6:32-8:11). A man climbs down a coconut tree. Native girls do a hula dance. Sailors watch the women. Woman dances. Sailors applaud. Sailors return to the ships and look at the sunset (8:12-9:32). End credits (9:33-9:37).
