Made in 1929, “Hello Hawaii” presents views of Honolulu and the Hawaiian islands in the pre-WWII era, before the U.S. Navy fully expanded its Pacific Fleet HQ to Pearl Harbor.

This is a story about a trip made by the American navy to Hawaii. Honolulu bound Navy men and ships sail over the sparkling Pacific to America’s island playground. At mark 1:00, the ships are seen on maneuvers. At mark 1:35, Hawaii sunny skies, waving palms and all that makes tropical paradise is seen. On these isles of eternal sunshine is Pearl Harbor, a naval base of primary importance. This is seen at mark 1:55. Indispensable to the nation as a fortified base for the navy’s ships on the sea and in the air. At mark 2:20, a hovercraft is seen. At mark 2:35, the sailor men are seen in their uniforms all getting onboard. Hello Hawaii, hello. The sailor men are seen at mark 2:58 alighting. At smoking Kilauea, the sailor men pay tribute to the Goddess Pele, mother of eternal fire. This is seen at mark 3:05. At mark 3:30, they are sightseeing a volcanic eruption. All roads lead to the world famous beach as seen at mark 3:55. At mark 4:00, the sailor men are in a bus on their way to the beach. Every day is Navy day at Waikiki as seen at mark 4:35. The sailors are seen all swimming in the beach. Asides from the beach, there are also other thrills at Waikiki as seen at mark 5:10. The sailor men are seen at mark 5:27 surfing. Riding a surf board looks easy but try and do it. Outrigger canoes are popular with more timid souls. This is seen at mark 6:05. They are seen riding in the canoe. At mark 6:35, a spill in the surf is seen. Shorty McGinnis of the submarine flotilla, never happy unless someone was dancing as seen at mark 6:45. He gave up farming to see a real Hawaiian hula. This Hawaiian hula is seen at mark 7:00. The Hawaiian ladies are seen dancing, if only the boys back at the farm could see this. At mark 7:30, Shorty is seen enjoying the moment with the ladies. Ten days at sea had cured him of his rustic bashfulness. At mark 8:00, his sailor men are seen conversing about his late nature with the girls.

At mark 8:29, his fellas are all talking about him and at mark 8:30, they plan on teaching him a lesson. At mark 8:50, Shorty McGinnis carried by his colleagues all tied in ropes and shackles and is seen transported away from the beach. At mark 9:30, he is dropped of the vehicle tied on both legs and hands and left all alone along the street with grass underwear. Next to himself, Shorty didn’t like grass underwear. At mark 10:07, he made his way back to their ship.
