42924 1940s WORKPLACE & INDUSTRIAL SAFETY FILM “THE VOICE OF THE BOOK” RAILROADS

This 1952 black and white film about work safety is depicted using actors Larry Paquin (George Todd), John Hatton (Charlie Todd), Pat Jenkins (Sally Kendrick), Woodbury (Mabel), Ann Dere (Grace Todd), Art Jarrett (General Manager), Al McGranary (Mayor), and Marie Hildreth (Mrs. Wallace). It is produced by Video Varieties Corp. New York City. The conductor leans his head out of the train window (:39-:52). Men outside a store look at their pocket watches as the train whistle blows (1:07). A “Philco Stores” forklift driver moves containers (1:29). An assembly line of refrigerators hang from hooks (1:44). Sally and her beau Charlie sit on the couch in a 1950s living room. Her disapproving mother arranges flowers in a vase (2:25-2:48). George, Charlie’s uncle, has safety wall signs in his office: “Be where you are with all your mind” and “The Law of accidents is the law of cause and effect” 2:49-3:26). A train engineer climbs down a cab ladder (4:39-4:47). The couple lean in close on the couch. She admires her engagement ring and they hug (5:55-6:10). George watches as Charlie runs across multiple train tracks. The two argue (7:43-9:20). The mayor and a woman wearing a 1950s two-piece suit with ruffled blouse, hat, white short gloves, and large pearl earrings talk in George’s office (9:40-11:22). George and the General Manager shake hands (11:43). Sally, wearing a 1950s scalloped neckline blouse, sits on the floral couch (13:47). Charlie’s new job is at a men’s dress store. Mannequins display 1950s ties and shirts (14:51-15:12). George checks his pocket watch when the train whistle blows. He dials a black rotary telephone (15:47-16:23). A building advertisement for Van Heusen Shirts is seen downtown (19:19). A program cover says ‘Commencement Week High School Fiftieth Anniversary Class’ (19:23). The school auditorium is full (19:28). George wipes his forehead with a handkerchief (19:32). His wife, wearing a straw hat with netting and white gloves, straightens his tie and kisses him (19:59-20:20). The audience smiles and claps (21:19-21:25). Sally’s 1950s hat has silk flowers and netting (22:59). George’s scrapbook is filled with safety brochures, including The ABC’s of Lifting, Industrial Safety, and Psychology of Safety in Supervision (23:26-23:48). The teenagers in the auditorium listen intently (25:06). A Lackawanna streamliner “Phoebe Snow” train car is shown (26:39). Outside Frieda & Joe’s, a young man gets into his 1940s convertible with a back spare tire (26:50-27:17). A 1950s Plymouth Special DeLuxe Convertible passes railroad signs and a “Thru Traffic Stop” sign (27:18-28:05). A railroad worker climbs down a ladder on a Canadian National 483416 train car (28:11-28:22). A man falls off an unstable ladder outside a house. He grips his arm while lying on the ground (28:55-29:26). A man trips running across the rails and falls in front of a moving train. George lifts his pant leg to show what may be an artificial leg or a leg with a heavy brace (30:07-30:35). The audience gives a standing ovation (32:55). Sally waves to Charlie in the train cab (34:11-34:18).
