42814 “MORE ACRES PER GALLON” JOHN DEERE TRACTOR GAS ECONOMY INDUSTRIAL FILM GAS CRISIS

Made at the height of the 1970s gas crisis, this John Deere produced film showcases the work Deere was doing to increase fuel economy with its diesel engines. “More acres per gallon” was a mantra in this era and remains relevant today.

It features the John Deere model 4440, the most popular tractor of the Iron Horses series.

The film gives various tips about how to conserve fuel, including proper use of equipment, the right tool for the right job, and driving and operating techniques. At 3:30, the use of wheel weights is seen. With ballast in use, slippage is reduced and fuel is saved. Ballasting is an art and there is a balance between time saved and fuel expenditure.

At 4:39, John Deere’s Dyna-Cart is shown, a research device that allows various drawbar loads to be simulated while measuring fuel consumption.

Motion picture films don’t last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we’ve worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies — including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you’d like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we’d love to hear from you.
