Titled the Cameracade, this silent, color film by the Master Photo Finishers of America promotes the art and hobby of black and white / panchromatic photography and presents wonderful vintage images of people using cameras to document their everyday lives.
At 5:22 the film shows a DC-3 taking off, and at 6 minutes there are shots aboard a diesel locomotive. There are also many other wonderful moments in the film including visits to Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, the Golden Gate Bridge (10:57 mark), stunning images of Times Square in color (11:46) featuring the famed Wrigley’s Gum neon sign. At 13:30 you’ll see inside a 1940s photography shop! At 16:00, the entire process of making prints on an industrial scale is shown, and then enlargements, etc.
The Master Photo Finishers of America was founded in 1924 and eventually became absorbed into the Photo Marketing Association (PMA), which was established in 1924. The PMA, previously known as the Master Photo Dealers’ and Finishers’ Association, was formed by the merger of the Master Photo Finishers of America and the National Photographic Dealers Association (founded in 1933). The PMA still exists and sponsors several important industry publications and maintains a photofinishing and photography retailing reference library and hall of fame at its Jackson, Mississippi, headquarters.
