This sound Castle News Parade of 1939 shows the important news of that year — the year WWII began in Europe. Some of the other news events included Franco’s victory in the Spanish Civil War, Pan Am’s new Boeing 314 Clippers initiating trans-Atlantic service, King George and Queen Elizabeth return to London from their North American trip, Franco-British Unity at Bastille Day (2:11) in Paris, terrible earthquake in Chile, and more. At 3:45 the rescue of the submarine USS Squalus, SS-192, is shown. The submarine sank after a training accident off the coast of New England. The salvage and support vessel USS Falcon came to the rescue, along with submarine rescue innovator Charles Momsen, whose highly-trained crew saved precious lives using a rescue diving bell.

The Tientsin incident was an international incident created by a blockade by the Imperial Japanese Army’s Japanese Northern China Area Army of the British settlements in the north China treaty port of Tientsin in June 1939. Originating as a minor administrative dispute, it escalated into a major diplomatic incident.
At 5:46 floods inundate China. At 6:12 a mass wedding is shown in Montreal. At 6:47 the German invasion of Poland is shown with Warsaw being bombed. At 7:50 a grain elevator fire is shown in Chicago. At 8:30 U.S. cruisers are shown roving across the tip of South America and Cape Horn.
The Boeing 314 Clipper was a long-range flying boat produced by the Boeing Airplane Company between 1938 and 1941. One of the largest aircraft of the time, it used the massive wing of Boeing’s earlier XB-15 bomber prototype to achieve the range necessary for flights across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Twelve Clippers were built; nine were brought into service for Pan Am
