This 1955 color educational film about gold filling is an RKO Pathe Production produced by Jay Bonafield, narrated by Dwight Weist. A woman wearing a 1950s calf-length suit with broach and large pin, wedge shoes, and pillbox hat enters a store. The salesman fails to explain the value of filled gold jewelry, to which the narrator does. A display of china patterns is in a showcase (:45-3:57). Gold is shown in the following: quartz rock, headpiece on an Egyptian mannequin, Egyptian statue, Roman sheath, Chinese drinking vessel, an elaborately carved cup adorned with jewels, Renaissance snuffboxes, and 16th century watch cases (3:58-5:10). Paintings are shown of explorers and prospectors searching for gold (5:11-6:27). The 1742 accidental discovery of attaching a gold coin to silver in England is reenacted, which resulted in the process called gold filling (6:29-9:21). A bar of 24-carat pure gold is shown. It is cut into smaller pieces and mixed with other metals, depending on the tint desired. The mix is heated and poured into a mold. The new bar is rolled and annealed before being stamped. It next is permanently bonded to the foundation metal in the Drever furnace and cooled. The gold filling is rolled out as flat stock. Products shown are cufflinks, tie clasps, watch cases, lighters, and belt buckles (9:22-13:07). Disks are cut and bonded in a cylinder shape, which are reduced further to become gold-filled wires. Products shown are filigree watch attachments, earrings, and necklaces (13:08-15:26). A third type of gold-filling is tubing. An assortment of gold-filled jewelry is shown (15:27-16:16). Soldering and polishing is done by hand. Cuff links are shown being made (16:17-19:35). A gold-filled watch case and expandable band are made (19:36-22:26).
