Narrated by Dan Rather, and originally broadcast as a segment of the CBS reports television program on March 4, 1964.
This film discusses the search for the submarine USS Thresher SSN-593, a nuclear power attack submarine built by the United States navy. The submarine was lost on April 10th, 1963, during deep diving tests approximately 220 miles east of Boston, Massachusetts. This was a watershed event for the United States Navy, leading to the implementation of a rigorous submarine safety program known as SUBSAFE. One hundred and twenty nine crew members and shipyard personnel were killed in the incident, making it the world’s worst submarine disaster. It was also the first nuclear submarine lost at sea.
