40384 1890s VIEWS OF NEW YORK CITY, SAN FRANCISCO & FAMED PERSONALITIES INCLUDING TEDDY ROOSEVELT GAY NINETIES LIVE AGAIN

This 1940s black and white “Gay Nineties Live Again” was produced by Castle Films as part of the “Old Time Movies” series. Due to being early film, some of it reproduced from “paper prints” in the Library of Congress, some of the segments are faint or flickering. The film begins with the segment When Dobbin was King! (:24-:48). Two horses pull a trolley or horsecar. Seeing New York Via Steam-Engine! (:48-1:07). An elevated steam locomotive passes. Putt-putt and Bowlers (1:08-1:18) 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue, vintage automobiles pass men wearing derby (bowler) hats. Rush Hour! (1:20-1:40) A newsboy wearing knickers sells a newspaper and several police officers walk by. “Bertha, the Sewing Machine Girl!” (1:42-2:00) Women in white long-sleeve blouses, long skirts, and pompadour hairstyles clock out at a sewing factory, followed by women wearing a variety of long dresses and hats. Fifth Avenue at Easter-Time (2:02-2:10) Fifth Avenue showcases men in suits with top or bowler hats and canes. The women wear skirts and long jackets. Hats include tall feather plumes. Extra! The First Subway Rush! (2:12-2:25) Police keep a crowd orderly as they rush to enter the first underground line of the New York Subway on opening day, 1904. A Terrific Tennis Tournament! (2:29-2:55) A couple play lawn tennis with early rackets. The man wears knickers and a newsboy hat; the woman a long white 2-piece outfit, dark belt, and hat. Millinery on Parade (2:59-3:06) Women pass by in the elaborate hats of the 1890s. World Personalities of Yesteryear. Sarah Bernhardt (3:08-3:20) French actress Sarah Bernhardt rides through a crowd. John Bunny (3:25-3:35) Silent film comedian John Bunny puts on a woman’s cap and giggles into a hand mirror. Alexander Graham Bell (2:29-3:47) Bell is shown with his wife and a child. Teddy Roosevelt and His Heroic Rough Riders (3:49-4:24) A band leads Teddy and his men on horseback. 1889, he becomes New York’s Governor. Mme. Marie Curie (4:27-4:35) Curie works in her lab. Thomas Alva Edison (4:39-4:43). Edison smiles in a car. Governor-elect Woodrow Wilson (4:46-5:00) Wilson is seated, receiving election returns. Photographers are shown. Chicago as the Gay ‘90s Knew It (5:05-5:25). Michigan Boulevard has many 1890s automobiles horse-drawn trolleys, and pedestrians. San Francisco of the Virile Pioneers! (5:28-5:50) From trolley view, automobiles, people, and horses randomly cross in front. No Red Lights To Worry About (5:53-6:04 Same as previous. Fire Fights of a Bygone Era! (6:06-6:38) Horse-drawn fire engines hurriedly leave a station. When Grandma was a Bathing Beauty! (6:40-7:38) 1890s bathing suits shown in a beauty pageant. Lady Godiva of the Gay ‘90s (7:41-7:46) A girl rides a white horse. Milady Before the Boyish Bob! (7:49-8:05) Long wavy hair is put into an updo. Evening Gowns were Brief! (8:07-8:15) A backless plumed gown has a single length of chain. Dancing was Graceful…and Vigorous! (8:18-8:40). A couple dances a waltz. Tight Ropes… (8:43-8:50). A Coney Island tightrope walker jumps in the air. …and Tights (8:52-9:08) A woman with a parasol crosses the wire. Time Marches On! (9:11- A man cranks a touring car with two women in hats and goggles. The car jiggles everybody.
