34884f 1944 U.S. NAVY RECRUITING FILM PARACHUTE RIGGER “YOUR JOB IN THE NAVY”

This 1944 color restricted film about being an “Aviation Parachute Rigger” is part of a “Your Job in the Navy” series of recruitment films presented by the U.S. Navy. It opens with colorful parachutes hanging high on a wall. One is lowered by a wire to a waiting sailor (:23-:38). Women Parachute Riggers in Navy WAVES blouses sit at sewing machines and repair parachutes (:39-:52). Two Parachute Riggers are shown up-close packing a parachute along a long table. The entire parachute is closely inspected during packing (:53-1:55). The securing of the parachute pack shroud lines is shown up-close. The quick attachable seat parachute is packed and closed with wire locking pins. The tiny pilot parachute is packed last (1:56-3:24). The parachute is tested by attaching it to a metal structure armature and swinging it around at 120 mph. It deploys and the sailors work to save it from injury on the ground (3:25-4:30). A Parachute Rigger is taught how to jump by being hoisted up in a metal tower and pulling the rip cord to receive the jolt that happens in an airplane jump (4:31-4:55. Three sailors parachute from a training tower 4:56-5:13). A tumble landing is shown (5:14-5:23). Individuals jump from a plane (5:24-5:44). Colored chutes leave the plane, also packed by Parachute Riggers, and carry guns and supplies to ground troops. They are shown fully activated and drifting down (5:45-5:57).
