34884d 1944 WORLD WAR II RECRUITING FILM AVIATION ORDNANCEMAN “YOUR JOB IN THE NAVY”

This 1944 color restricted film about being an “Aviation Ordnanceman” is part of a “Your Job in the Navy” series of recruitment films presented by the U.S. Navy. It opens with a camera scan of SB2C-3 Helldivers. A group of Aviation Ordnancemen lift up the tail of a fighter and put a stand underneath it to hold it up. The wing guns are aligned using targets on the wall. The sailor waves his hand to indicate the direction the other sailor should make the adjustment (:15-1:15). An Aviation Ordnanceman uses the boresight telescope on the wing gun to create a perfect alignment. Another adjusts the sight from within the cockpit to perfect alignment (1:16-1:58). A group performs maintenance on machine guns. Every fifth cartridge fed into the belting machine’s tray is a red domed tracer bullet. The magazines are loaded into ammunition boxes (2:00-3:00). Ordnancemen remove empty ammunition boxes and replace them with full ones (3:02-3:57). A red flag on a vehicle indicates it is towing ammunition; in this case 1,000 pound bombs. An Ordnanceman fuses a bomb, shown up-close. It is wheeled under a plane and slowly lifted into place using a crank and attached (4:00-5:00). A very large torpedo is moved into place on a torpedo bomber. The bay door closes (5:02-5:40). An armed Helldiver’s propeller turns and the plane moves on the runway (5:41-6:05). A Coronado has many Navy personnel working on it, including Ordnancemen attaching a large torpedo using an electric hoist. The plane moves down the runway (6:06-6:40).
