34604 1970s UNITED AIRLINES BOEING 747 PROMOTIONAL FILM

This 1970s color film is a long advertisement for the Boeing United Airlines 747. “Those United Men and Their Flying Machine” is a play on words of the 1965 film Those Magnificent Men in the Flying Machines, whose theme song by the same name is played throughout this film. It opens with a stuffed Peanuts Snoopy dog sitting on a doghouse in a field, which begins flying after the Red Baron in a biplane (:25-2:33). A United Airlines Boeing 747 flies into view and then back to Snoopy flying on his doghouse (2:334-2:55). In 1909, Louis Bleriot is showing flying his Bleriot XI (2:56-3:57). The view of the jet outside the wing window on the 747 is shown, followed by the plane in flight (3:58-4:33). The propeller is started by hand on an early passenger biplane, interspersed with scenes inside the 747 cabin. There are many great photos of 1970s styles of clothing, shoes, and hairstyles shown intermixed with the biplane (4:34-5:25). The spiral stairway to the ‘red carpet room’ is shown. There passengers receive glasses of champagne (5:26-5:45). Passengers sit in their seats and a man works on a report (5:46-6:07). The stewardesses bring the food and beverage carts down the aisle in coach seating. The kitchen galley is large and highly functional, including convection ovens and refrigerators. A lift moves food up to the other levels. Passengers watch a movie of the biplane on a large screen (6:15-10:00). Shown is a 1911 Curtiss Model D ‘Pusher’ before showing views of the cockpit (10:01-10:24). The film returns to the Snoopy stuffed animal flying on the doghouse, intermixed with split views of scenes inside the 747 (10:25-11:28).

On November 8, 2017, United Airlines retired its very last 747.
