33874 1967 INDIANAPOLIS 500 AUTO RACE MICKEY THOMPSON AJ FOYT

This documentary details the 1967 51st Indy 500 race, and was produced by sponsor Wynn’s Car Care Products and Spotlite News. Racer and inventor Mickey Thompson works in his shop on two cars he will enter in the Indianapolis 500. Mickey’s #18 Charger is loaded onto the trailer (:14-1:00). Track practice is shown at the Indy track two weeks before qualifying trials. Racers shown are Mario Andretti, AJ Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Dan Gurney, Graham Hill, Jackie Steward, Jimmy Clark, and rookie Joschen Rindt. The #68 Wynn’s Mickey Thompson Spitfire car passes the camera. Driver Sammy Sessions prepares for the run and is shown on the track (1:01-2:48). A can of Wynn’s Radiator Stop-Leak is poured in. Thompson’s #18 car takes a turn on the track. The Driver’s Test is shown where drivers have to do multiple laps at a given speed. The cars miss qualifying and return to Gasoline Alley). Multiple racing car spin-outs during the test runs are shown (2:49-4:53). The stands fill to watch racing for track position. Andretti earns the pole position. The other racers are shown individually achieving their race positions. Three sons of racers compete in miniature Wynn’s peddle cars (4:54-8:57). May 30, 1967, the stands fill. Majorettes lead a band around the track. The air is full of balloons (8:58-9:46). The race begins as the pace car pulls off. Highlights of the race are shown until the red flag is flown to stop due to rain after only 18 laps (9:47-13:47). The race continues on May 31 as highlights are shown (13:48-16:30). Jones and Yarborough spin out together. The yellow caution flag is waved. The race continues (16:31-17:46). Andretti loses his right front wheel and catches it before it enters the track. The race continues. Jones pulls the fuel hose off after a pit stop. Two cars clash but both make it back on to continue racing. Dallenbach hits the inside wall and jumps out of the car stopped on the track (17:47-19:42). The pole shows Jones in #40 in first place at lap 101. Several cars take a pit stop. Foyt refuels at lap 148. Several drivers are out after car trouble. A car hits the wall and spins. Cars remain stalled on the track during the yellow flag. A tow truck removes the race car. Another car spins out (19:43-23:32). The crowd in the stands rises for the dramatic finish. Jones, the leader, has a bearing failure, and his car slows to a stop. Foyt weaves through a five-car pile-up to win. Foyt wears a wreath of flowers and accepts his trophy (23:33-24:58).
