32114 U.S. NAVY JATO JET ASSISTED TAKEOFF FROM AIRCRAFT CARRIER TRAINING FILM

This is an unclassified 1940s black and white U.S. Navy Training Film, MN 2403. A jet unit, which gives a thrust to aircraft, is shown by itself. The parts are shown up-close: the copper nozzle exhaust, the electrically fired igniter, blow-off disk, the mounting lugs, adjustable band, and the chamber, and blow-off disk cap (1:08-2:53). They are shown stored in individual crates (2:54-3:20). Shown is checking the firing and releasing gear on the plane. Electrical wires are connected to contact points on the fuselage, the assist power take-off switch is closed, the stick trigger completes the circuit, and the release mechanism checked. The attachment hook on the plane is shown (3:21-4:29). The jet unit is uncrated for assembly. The band is attached, shipping plug removed from the igniter port, and the igniter inserted and screwed down (4:30-6:10). The unit is hung on the hook (6:11-6:30). The power switch must be off, and the contact points are connected to the igniter (6:31-6:56). A 1940s pilot dressed in leather flight jacket, helmet with goggles, and scarf explains a jet-assisted takeoff to another pilot (7:00-7:12). The pilot in the plane sets the flap elevator tabs, turns the assist take-off power switch on, visually check that nobody is standing by the rockets or the tail, throttle up the takeoff manifold, hold down the brakes, and pull and hold down the trigger until the thrust of the rockets is felt (shown firing) (7:13-8:15). The plane rockets down the runway. When clear, the release is pulled and the rocket units are dropped onto the runway (8:16-8:37). Next shown is a land-based takeoff with little wind. The pilot sets the flap elevator tabs, turns the assist take-off power switch on, visually check that nobody is standing by the rockets or the tail, throttle up the takeoff manifold, and release the brakes to begin rolling. Wait and then pull and hold down the trigger until the thrust of the rockets is felt (shown firing) (8:38-9:49). Jet performance on takeoff is shown both unassisted and assisted using the five types of carrier planes: the Lockheed F4A (10:03-10:27), Vought F4U Corsair (10:28-11:00), Grumman F6F Hellcat (11:01-11:37), Douglas SBD Dauntless (11:38-12:09), and Grumman TBF Avenger (12:10-12:43).
