Made in 1946 by Britain’s Central Office of Information, “The Fire Services at War” tells the incredible story of how the UK survived the German Blitz and especially, the use of incendiary weapons by Nazi Germany. The film begins with scenes of the preparation and lead-up to war, and the recruitment of a whole army of Civil Defense workers, including a regular fire brigade heavily reinforced by volunteers. A volunteers talks about how he joined and what it was like. The film describes every aspect of the training of Civil Defense workers, their mobilization as soon as war was declared; their action during the bombing raids on Britain; their merger into a single organization; the training under the new scheme; their part in the invasion of Europe; their action when London was again under fire in the winter of 1944, this time by Hitler’s Vengeance weapons the V-1 and V-2. Finally, there is a ceremony in Hyde Park celebrating the release of part-time firemen and women; the Queen and Princess Elizabeth paying tribute to the women; in June, 1945, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth reviewing Civil Defence workers in Hyde Park.
