30934 6th ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL MILITARY SPORT COUNCIL PARACHUTING COMPETITION CISM 1974 FT. BRAGG

Dating to 1974 when the International Military Sport Council’s parachute competition was held at Ft. Bragg, Kentucky, this U.S. Army shows contestants from 15 nations, including Vietnam. Members of the famed 82nd Airborne Division hosted the event. At 3:46 U.S. Army Huey helicopters are used to make jumps. At 6:51 individual awards are given to the top three participants. The team from the USA won the overall first place team trophy that year (7:50).

Parachuting, or skydiving, is the action sport of exiting an aircraft and returning to Earth with the aid of gravity, then slowing down during the last part of the descent by using a parachute. It may or may not involve a certain amount of free-fall, a time during which the parachute has not been deployed and the body gradually accelerates to terminal velocity.

The International Military Sports Council (IMSC) or Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM), established 1948, is one of the largest multidisciplinary organisations in the world. CISM is the second largest multi-sport discipline organization after the International Olympic Committee, holding more than 20 competitions annually.[1] Soldiers, who may previously have met on the battlefield, now meet on the sports playing field. It organises various sporting events, including the Military World Games and World Military Championships for the armed forces of 134 member countries.[2] The aim of CISM is to promote sport activity and physical education between armed forces as a means to foster world peace. The motto of CISM is “Friendship through Sport” and is based on three pillars of sport, education and solidarity.[3] This is in accordance with the philosophy and the ideals which were set in CISM’s mission statement in 1998, signed by all the member countries.
