30054 1930s PAN AM AIRLINES CLIPPER SERVICE PROMOTIONAL FILM GUAM MACAO WAKE ISLAND

This film is a fragment of a travelogue apparently made by Pan Am Airlines just prior to WWII, “High Road in the Sky”. At this time Pan Am offered Clipper Service across the Pacific from San Francisco to Hong Kong, with several stops for refueling along the way. The film begins with footage of passengers taking a break to do some deep sea fishing at Wake Island. At 1:47, a small boat is used to sail out to a coral garden in the Wake lagoon. At 6:45, Guam in the Marshall Islands is seen with its colonial charm and coconut trees. At 7:10, the American governor’s palace is seen. At 7:39, the port of Macao aka Macau is shown with its broad streets, coolie powered cabs, and Portuguese inspired buildings and Chinese temples. At 9:00 the road to China is seen with various people carrying merchandise on their shoulders. At 9:29, firecrackers are seen being dried in the sun, and firework production is seen. At 10:30 a religious procession is seen complete with a lion faced dragon. At 11:10, Chinese junks are seen in the harbor at Macao. At 12:00, the film shows the new Pan Am flying boat or Flying Clipper above the China Sea, headed towards Hong Kong.
