29914 “ VICTORY IN EUROPE ” WWII IN EUROPE, BATTLE OF THE BULGE & SURRENDER OF GERMANY DOCUMENTARY

This documentary film from 1957 delivers an in depth look at the final months of WWII in Europe. It opens with scenes from Germany in late 1944. Germany spent the first two weeks of December repositioning 1,000 V-2 rockets. The V-2 was the world’s first long range guided ballistic missile, developed by Wernher Von Braun during WW2. Germany used it as a “vengeance weapon” in revenge for the devastation wrought by Allied bombing. German technicians move a V-2 (:38). Shot of the launching site (:52). A situation map is presented (1:18) of 1944. The Battle of the Bulge, the final German offensive. The ‘bulge’; the weak site in the Allied forces line in the Ardennes forest where the Germans planned to sweep through, is noted (1:36). Antwerp; the Allies port of supply, is cited as the final destination (1:39). Military vehicles cart Nazi forces (1:49) through the Ardennes. The panzer fleet mows through fog (1:54). The V2 heads for Antwerp on December 16 (2:24). Buzz bombs and V1s rip from launchers (2:45). Explosions pop in dirt (2:54). Bombs fall on the city (3:08). A close shot traces a rocket dropping (3:14). Flames lick at the debris (3:21). A Nazi squadron leader (3:23) calls fire. 2,000 long range German guns begin bellowing for the Allied forces (3:29) in the Ardennes. German troops advance 20 miles (3:57). American soldiers are captured (4:26). Dead lay in the weeds (4:33). German troops and supply line continue to push for Antwerp (4:40). The city of Antwerp smolders following the rocket attack (4:48). A woman’s head is uncovered in the rubble (5:03). Wounded are carted out by litter (5:08). German troops move through fog towards the Meuse River (5:36). Ground footage from Bastogne follows (5:47). American troops fight corner to corner (6:13). An automatic fires from a window sill (6:14). A panzer tank rolls in (6:27). A grenade blows the base of row homes (6:36). Ground support at an allied air base uncover planes from snow (7:05). Snow plows cut through thick layers (7:21) on the airfield. The P-47 flies with little visibility (7:24). Planes slide and crash from dangerous landings (7:30). A tank erupts in flames (7:47). The sun breaks the clouds (7:53). Soldiers trace the skies for the incoming Allied Air Force (7:55). Planes of the 9th troop carrier command swing in (8:09). Paratroops spill out (8:22). Ground troops rush for supplies (8:41). A small jeep arrives with fresh faced troops as the Allied forces are reinforced (9:12). Footage follows from a fighter plane (9:36). Allied bombs explode (9:54). The underbelly of a P-47 is pictured (10:03). Rockets fire (10:16). Allied tanks move into the flat Rhineland in February (10:22). Sherman tanks swing in (10:25). Targets explode throughout the city (10:59). Another point of view shot follows from a plane firing rounds into dirt (11:12). Covered jeeps bounce through the woods (11:20). German planes blow bridges (12:00). The bridge at Remagen (12:06) as seen from above. The 9th Division tacks a sign onto the bridge (12:25). Air support flies in from the north (12:40). A view follows from a transport plane as paratroops tumble out (13:03). Exploded parachutes dot the sky (13:14). Air support moves through the lower Rhine (13:28). Eisenhower, Montgomery and Bradley are pictured (13:54). B-17’s fly over Berlin on April 10, 1945 to aid the Russian advance (14:36). Bombs dropping (14:55). Explosion erupt over the city (15:10). Russian troops stand in the trenches (15:57). A jet of flames screams from a flame thrower (16:43). The first Ukrainian army is pictured as they arrive at one side of the Elbe (17:06). US troops wave from the other side of the river (17:08) on April 25th. The two armies join (17:12). A banner greets the US troops (17:44). Aerial views capture bombed out buildings (17:54), wrecked oil refineries (18:27) and a ruined manufacturing plant (18:37). Industrial plants were hit (18:54). Rubble along the road (19:24). Gates are opened on May 9th, 1945 (19:33) as cities were liberated. Troops celebrate across Europe (19:53). Emaciated prisoners are pictured (20:26). A young girl flashes her tattoo (21:00). Allied troops head home (21:57). Troops unload from trains (22:53).
