28994 FIRST WORLD WAR THE 1927 AMERICAN LEGION PARADE IN PARIS 9th ANNIVERSARY OF WWI ARMISTICE FIRST WORLD WAR (Print 2)

This silent film was originally released by Kodak in 1928. It delivers a look at the American Legion Parade in Paris in September of 1927. Over 20,000 Americans visited France that year for the 9th anniversary of WW1. Attendees of the Americas Legions 9th National Convention are known as the Second American Expeditionary Force. General Pershing accompanied national commander Howard P. Salvage aboard the steamship Leviathan. A dinner party is hosted by the French President Gaston Doumergue. Other notable sites include various battle fields and the American Cemetery. The film opens with images of the steamship Leviathan (:16). General Pershing arrives in Cherbourg, France (:40). A reception committee on a tender greets Savage and Pershing (:54). The men shake hands with supporters as they step from the steamship (:58). The parade marches through the streets of France (2:02). The stunning Hotel de Ville is pictured (2:18). Aerial footage captures the American Cemetery at Suresnes (2:43). A ceremony takes place honoring fallen soldiers (3:06). Marshall Foch delivers a speech for the dead (3:19). General Pershing makes a speech (3:33). The American Legion marches through Paris streets (3:50). The Arc de Triomphe; under which the invading German army marched, appears (4:00). Flowers are dropped for the Unknown Soldier’s Tomb (4:15). Aerial shots capture the Arc de Triomphe (4:26). Marching bands pass the pile of flowers for the Unknown Soldier (4:51). A wide shot shows Hotel de Ville again (5:27). American Legion Parade attendee’s wave flags (5:37). General Gouraud, Marshall Foch and Pershing review the stalwart hosts (5:47). An aerial shot shows the celebration from above (6:33). Ground view shots show the brass band (6:45). Celebrators from Pennsylvania carry a banner (6:53). The March of Victory is remembered (8:12). Champagne is poured for a toast (8:45) in the city of Rheims. A white bearded war veteran of the war of 1870 and WW1 (9:09) toasts. The Rheims cathedral is pictured restored (9:33) to its former glory. The Trocadero (10:06) follows. The legion is pictured in session within (10:17). President Doumerque passes the gavel to national commander Howard savage at the start of the meeting (10:39).
