28364 PRE-WWII 1939 U.S. NAVY COMBAT EXERCISE “FILMING THE FLEET” SAN DIEGO

This black & white educational film is about the United States Navy showing off its skills on the high seas during a mock war-games session. Copyright is 1939.

Opening titles: 20th Century Fox presents Adventures of the Newsreel Cameraman, Filming the Fleet (:06-:43). Marching Navy men in San Diego, CA. This is their last day before leaving. The ships are ready to leave. Sailors hug their loved ones. A woman and her small child, dressed as a sailor, wave goodbye to her husband. Boats head out to the big ships, men wave, women blow kisses. Big slabs of beef are put onto the ships. The giant hooks are hauled aboard, the anchor is raised. Time to sail (:44-2:04). Navy battleships at sea. Men wash down the deck, with hoses and mops. Men scrub the deck. Food is begin made. Food is brought out for the men. The sailors line up and are checked by the Captain. The sailors watch a boxing match on deck at sea. A giant armada at sea, winds whip up, seas are rough, bad weather ahead. Baton down the hatches. The waves hit the ship’s hull. Sailors try to not get washed overboard, huge waves come over the stern. A cruiser sends a signal and they have started taking on water. Seas stay rocky and choppy (2:05-5:31). The ships weather the storm. Sun is shining, ships at sea. War games are going to take place. Sailors head for their posts to partake. Pilots get into their planes, men man turrets. Airplanes start the propellers, they take off into the air. The fleet moves into position as the squadron protects the fleet from the sky. The planes fly over the ships. Signals are given and the ships turn. Shells are loaded into the guns and they commence firing, the guns fire off shells and torpedoes are launched. A submarine also enters the war-game. Torpedoes are fired. Ships blast guns. Destroyers lay a smoke screen to allow the submarine to move. Squadron drops bombs from the sky (5:32-9:25) and depth charges (8:20). Signals are given. Planes drop a curtain of smoke to end the battle play. Smoke is everywhere. Battleships come through the smoke clouds. Planes fly. The ships are homeward bound. American flag flies in the wind (9:26-10:29). End credits (10:30-1039).
