27854 HISTORY OF AVIATION IN BRAZIL SOUTH AMERICA

The United States Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs presents “Wings Over Brazil,” a 1944 report on advancements in aviation in Brazil. The film begins with a look at some of the early figures in Brazilian aviation history, including Alberto Santos-Dumont (mark 01:46), the creation of his memorial, and the founding of the Escola de Especialistas de Aeronautica in 1941. As the film moves forward, there are reports on President Getulio Vargas and Brazil’s role among the allied nations in wartime (mark 02:40). There are numerous scenes from air cadet training (mark 03:45) before finally reaching graduation day at mark 07:05. We then see images of air patrols of its coastline and providing protection for ocean transport ships (mark 07:45), followed by profiles of the developing infrastructure of air travel in Brazilian nation (mark 08:50) and visits to newly constructed airports at Belem, Rio De Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre, and Natal, beginning at mark 10:08. Although the film focuses on Brazil at war, the narrator has a positive message starting at mark 12:50: “Tomorrow … the skies will be air routes to peace, trade, and better understanding among men.”
