When Leonidas and his 300 Spartans attempted to stem the Persian invasion at Thermopylae, the spot was a narrow pass along the eastern seacoast of Greece. Today Thermopylae is a rocky plain six miles in from the sea and presently the scene of a Marshall Plan-funded experiment in soil reclamation. Drained of its sea salts and sweetened with river water, the plain now yields its first harvest of rice. 1950, David Kurland Productions
