McGraw Hill (:07) delivers a documentary “Nightmare in Red” on Soviet Russia. This is Part II of a two part film. The film begins with the death of Vladimir Lenin continuing through Stalin’s rise to power, the Non-aggression Pact as well as the Russian uprising against the Nazis. It opens with Russian soldiers marching (:24). A parade procession moves with pedestrians holding large signs and cut outs (:43). A float passes by (:53). The Kremlin is pictured under a heavy blanket of snow (1:00). Lenin’s funeral is depicted on January 27th, 1924 (1:03). A long stream of supporters mourn (1:07) bringing flowers and other trinkets. His corpse is pictured (1:11). Stalin stands at Lenin’s bedside (1:24). He becomes Lenin’s successor (1:51). Russians hammer at rocky grounds as a program of industrialization is implemented (2:04). The Secret Police (2:14) supervise prison labor (2:12). The film mentions forced collectivization of agriculture (2:45) over images of peasants collecting heaps of hay (3:00). The land and equipment were owned by the State (3:05). A Soviet party member meets with a female peasant (3:29). Soviet police move in on millions of Kulaks; famers attempting to maintain their independence (3:48). Stalin orders annihilation and deportation (3:59). Images of famine appear (4:32). Poor Russians stand around clothing strewn about the ground (4:34). An emaciated couple is pictured outside of a shack (4:43). Stalin watches the Red army march (4:59). Supporters carry posters of Stalin’s face (5:38). A painting of Lenin appears (5:51). Stalin sought to destroy images which honored former leaders (6:08). A paranoid Stalin enacted political purges during 1936 to 1938 (6:47). Images from these trials are pictured (6:58). The Chief Prosecutor was Vyshinsky is heard speaking about old Bolsheviks (7:16). Stalin addresses the Russia public from the Kremlin (8:32). The Soviet Calvary move in a mass by the Kremlin rifles strapped to their backs (8:38). Foot soldiers march (8:45). A Nazi party meeting is pictured (8:51) with Hitler at the podium. The German army marches (9:04). Soviet tankers rolls by (9:27). The Luftwaffe fly over (9:42) and the Panzer fleet rolls under (9:45). The Nazi flag blows in the wind (9:48). Newspaper headlines of the New York Times appear from August 23rd, 1939 (9:59) as the Germans and Russians sign a non-aggression pact. Vyacheslav Molotov (10:11) and Joachim von Ribbentrop (10:14) meet at the Kremlin. Signatures are zoomed in on at the bottom of the pact (10:26) as World War 2 began to simmer to a boil. The two countries invade Poland (10:34). The Renault FT-17 tank appears (10:56). Germany invaded Russia on June 22nd 1941 (11:03). The Shellhuset building in Copenhagen appears under fire (11:11). Luftwaffe shadows mark the ground ominously (11:32). The Messerschmitt BF 110 (11:37) flies over foot soldiers (11:40). Two million Soviet prisoners were captured (11:46). Workers and peasants cheer the German army as liberators (12:16). Military jeeps roll though muddy waters (12:20) lined with poor Russian shacks (12:20). A local gives a plate of food to Nazis (12:29) as a gesture of kindness. Statues of Stalin are decimated (13:00). A small poster of Hitler is stuck on the window (13:20) of a telephone booth. Nazi flags are handed out (13:25). The Russian Army of Liberation mobilized on the eastern front (13:40). The disillusioned Lieutenant General Vlasov appears (13:44). Nearly a million captured Russian soldiers joined the German army (13:49). Their faces and arm badges are zoomed in on (14:06). Nazis supervise as Russians are forced to harvest foods for German use (14:32). Russian citizens are beat in the streets (15:01). Distraught pedestrians bear witness (15:18). Citizens are dangled by the neck as example (15:20). Rogue Russians mobilize in the woods (16:06). A soldier runs by a corpse splayed on the ground, scooping up his rife (16:33). The guerilla forces blow a small stone bridge (16:43). The Battle of Stalingrad erupted on August 23rd, 1942 (17:08). Snow blow over frozen corpses (17:38). WW2 ended in 1945 (18:06). A grey haired Stalin appears in the Kremlin (18:41). Party members spread propaganda to Russian citizens (20:40). Noble Russians dine (21:17) as economic inequality bloomed. Stalin perished in 1953 (22:25). Secret police beam lights upon prisoners jammed in their cells (23:55). Prisoners are exiled to Siberia (25:25).
