This 1973 film (DOD 23521), narrated by Jack Webb and produced by EMC Corporation, gives viewers a look at the training required to join the Marine Corps. The film opens with new recruits arriving at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. The new recruits run off the bus and file into line at the entrance of the Depot to await processing. Recruits have their heads shaved in the Depot’s barber shop (02:36). Next, they are issued clothing then stand for inspection (03:30). Later, the recruits go through a physical examination. A dentist examines one recruit’s teeth. Recruits sit for an academic aptitude test (04:37); then they go through physical training, doing pullups and sit-ups. On the last day of processing, the recruits receive their rifles (05:45). The men march with their weapons and gear. A drill instructor arrives and begins to train the men. A commander interviews members of the Marine Corps for drill instructor positions (07:55) and the film reviews a little of what is required to be a drill instructor. Drill instructors sit in a classroom at Drill Instructor School (08:37). A Series Commander interviews a newly minted drill instructor. A drill instructor teaches a recruit how to properly hold his firearm during drill (09:42). The recruits engage in physical training on the beach. They sit in the classroom and learn about their weapons (10:38). The men train in close combat on the beach with padded sticks and helmets (11:18) and then practice hand-to-hand combat as a group. The recruits run through an obstacle course during their training (12:05). Several recruits sit in the special training branch (13:02), where they receive specialized training to help them close the gap between themselves and their peers. Recruits in correctional custody break up concrete with sledge hammers (13:47). The recruits jog on the beach during PT (14:16). Other recruits participate in a game of tug-o-war, rope climbing relay competitions, and rifle assembly competitions. Men train in “drown-proofing” by jumping into a pool in full uniform with their rifles (15:30). Recruits learn to shoot at the rifle range (16:20); they practice shooting handguns as well (17:24). The film shows another aspect of the second phase of training: basic field skills training (17:39). Men learn how to use a compass, maps, and work with mines and demolition charges. The recruits climb under barbed wire during an infiltration training exercise (18:38). The men train at night, and tracer displays show the various fire patterns (20:20). At the Recruit Depot, the men receive their new uniforms (20:45). They dress for graduation in their barracks (21:55). The recruits stand at attention and march as part of the graduation ceremony. The Marine Corps band plays. A commander hands out awards to several recruits during the ceremony (23:03). The film concludes with various clips from training.
