This silent German film from the 1930s “The Mountain Stream” shows expansive views of the Alps and the people who live in the alpine region. The bucolic film starts with images of melting ice before showing a rushing mountain stream, herds of goats, and a rustic cabin (1:40). At 2:00 a farmer in lederhosen attends to his dairy cows and at (2:22) churns milk into butter using water power. At 3:00 the stream supports flowers, bees and butterflies. At 3:45 children drink from the stream. At 4:26 a farmer moves a bag of wheat up the mountain on a cable car that is powered by a water wheel. At 5:23 a mountain town is shown complete with a church. Huge waterfalls are shown at 6:40. At 7:46 the bag of wheat is ground into grain by the power of water. At 8:15 logs are floated into the river by foresters. At 9:00 a lumberjack moves the logs in the river. At 9:15 logs are moved into a sawmill which, once again, is powered by water. At 10:00 clothes are washed in the river and dried on clotheslines. At 10:42 blacksmiths use a water-powered hammer to make iron or steel tools. At 12:30 a hammer is used by a cobbler to repair a boot. At 12:44 a man wearing lederhosen goes fishing in the mountain stream. At 13:20 a child puts a toy boat in the stream. At 13:52 kayakers make their way down the stream which by now has become a river.
