25754 U.S. MARINE CORPS 1968 SOUTH VIETNAMESE REFUGEES DOCUMENTARY VIETNAM WAR

This 1968 United States Marine Corps color propaganda documentary MH-10476 documents the USMC’s part in the large-scale evacuation of the South Vietnamese refugees and helping them establish a new safer life away from the Viet Cong as part of the Civic Action Program. The film opens with the different faces of Vietnamese refugees of all ages. A transport helicopter lands and refugees run out. A child runs, carrying another child on his back. Another elderly man walks with a stick, the helicopter seen behind him (:06-1:15). Marines patrol through the tall grass in Vietnam. Young children refugees group together. Refugees run as shots are fired at them and the Marines fire back. Marines help refugees carrying their belongings hung on carrying poles cross a river (1:16-3:22). A Boeing CH-47 Chinook move through the sky over the I Corps provinces. It lands and Marines encourage refugees caught in cross-fire to run into the helicopter’s open door. Footage is shown inside the helicopter of the many faces of the refugees. The disembark at a refugee collection center. Water is poured into a metal cup and a child drinks from it. A pin hooked on a jacket has a picture of Jesus on it. Many women and children are shown, some wearing conical hats (3:24-8:07). Paperwork is filled out by government workers and groups of families are loaded onto an open bed truck with benches and transported to safe housing. Food is distributed. A close-up is shown of blankets distributed by Crawford Mfg. Co. of Richmond, VA. Added to the blanket is oil, salt, and soap. A man uses his conical hat to carry dried fish he is given. Refugees are examined in a clinic. A tooth is pulled. The Agency of International Development (AID) meets to coordinate distributions. Nurses are shown at the clinic (8:08-10:38). Makeshift beams are raised to construct housing. Refugees hoe in a vegetable garden. Baskets of vegetables and rice are shown for sale. A teacher works with children in a classroom (10:39-11:35). Marines help refugees cross a field. They carry they belongs hung on carrying poles. The faces of the Vietnamese are shown at their new villages. Wells are dug among scaffolding. Dirt is pulleyed up in a bucket. A woman draws water from the finished well. A game of volleyball is in progress in front of the refugee homes (11:36-13:43).
