24004 MILITARY CAREER OF GENERAL DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER ABILENE TO V-E DAY BIG PICTURE

This 1963 black and white film, produced by the Army, is part of “The Big Picture” television series narrated by actor Raymond Massey. The host is Army Master Sergeant Stuart Queen. The film’s focus is Dwight D. Eisenhower’s military career, with a great deal of battlefield live footage (:38-1:00). 1945, crowds gather in Abilene, Kansas for a parade celebrating the return of General Eisenhower, shown in full military uniform standing and saluting in his vehicle and in the stands (1:01-1:55). The camera pans Abilene (2:46-3:15). At the Eisenhower Museum, a series of murals and photos depict his life (2:46-5:15). The family home interior is shown (5:16-5:50). West Point cadets march across the field. His 1915 diploma is shown (6:25-7:00). Shown is a 1916 wedding photo to Mamie Doud (7:01-7:10). WWI show soldiers pour out of trenches (7:11-7:24). A photo of Officers includes Eisenhower and his Distinguished Service Medal certificate (7:25-7:41). The flash of an “Armistice” headline and crowds celebrate (7:44-7:52). His Command and General Staff School diploma is shown (7:53-8:12). 1930s, Dwight wears a white suit and straw hat, as does General MacArthur (8:13-8:31). Lieutenant Colonel Eisenhower poses in Fort Lewis, Washington (8:32-8:49). 1940, the German armored division tanks roll up a hill. Close-ups of bombs drop from planes (8:50-9:14). The Selective Service Act is passed (9:15-9:23). Dwight is shown in field photos (9:24-9:47). 1941, Colonel Eisenhower and General Walter Krueger pose together (9:48-10:03). Training maneuvers in Louisiana are shown (10:04-10:25). Brigadier General Eisenhower is photographed. Bombs hit Pearl Harbor (10:26-10:50). Eisenhower is photographed at the War Plans office (10:51-11:11). The 1942 invasion of North Africa shows shelling, soldiers, and weaponry amidst the mud (11:13-13:03). German soldiers are taken prisoner (13:04-13:11). Soldiers parade (13:12-13:56). Eisenhower is knighted (13:57-14:10). Shown is live footage of the invasion of Sicily and the attack at Italy (14:11-15:29). Eisenhower leaves his makeshift War Room (15:30-15:50). President Roosevelt rides with General Eisenhower (15:51-16:10). A war map is studied by Eisenhower (16:45-16:55). Nazi footage is shown of their camouflaged armaments and radar, followed by marching troops (16:56-17:13). Ike checks on soldiers training exercises, and visits the airborne troops who would lead the invasion (17:14-18:08). Live footage of D-Day is shown, including ships, planes, and troops in amphibious crafts. Soldiers storm up the beach, some are shot (18:09-19:22). One week after, Allied tanks cover the ground (19:23-19:31). Soldiers shoot, cannons fire, and buildings fall (19:32-19:52). General Patton’s army fights and marches through Paris (19:53-20:23). Tanks and guns fire; buildings crumble (20:24-20:40). Nazi footage shows the Battle of the Bulge, which switches to our troops (20:43-21:25). Troops cross the Remagen Bridge, followed by troops and tanks firing (21:26-21:55). German troops march in surrender (21:58-22:03). Eisenhower speaks one-on-one to soldiers (22:13-22:29). The German surrender in 1945 is shown, followed by a speech from Eisenhower (22:30-24:18). Flashes of different parades are shown (24:19-25:09). Ike visits troops and retires (25:10-25:54). He becomes President of Columbia University (26:00-26:13). Ike returns to service to lead NATO and then return to the U.S. (26:16-27:45).
