22974 1950s TRUE ADVENTURE TV SHOW DIVING FOR TREASURE IN THE REEFS OF BERMUDA & HAITI

This 1956 (?) episode of “True Adventure” by host and producer Bill Burrud, opens with the host showing gold doubloons salvaged from the wreck of a Spanish galleon. The episode features a beginner SCUBA diver named Joanne Gibson who is exploring the deep with expert divers. The episode showcases some of the new diving technologies that were gaining public interest in this era. At 2:12, a Power Dive — an electric powered underwater craft — is shown. Also shown are an array of underwater life including lobsters, sharks, octopi, fish and reef life. At 6:29 basics of SCUBA preparation are shown and Joanne practices on the reefs. At 7:40, an undersea treasure hunt is shown with Bermuda’s governor and expedition leader Teddy Tucker as well as his wife Edna. The two explore a shipwreck site. (Mr Tucker discovered more than 100 shipwrecks in Bermuda waters, and was a founding member of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute aka BUEI. His friend and author, the late Peter Benchley, once described Mr Tucker as the man who “brought the world to Bermuda, and Bermuda to the world”. His adventures inspired the Jaws author to write his second novel The Deep, which in 1977 was filmed in Bermuda and included Mr Tucker in the cast.) At 10:59 cannon balls, coins, and other items are shown recovered from the sea. At 12:00 a cannon is seen at the bottom of the sea. At 15:50, another expedition led by Ed Link presents salvaged items to the officials of the Republic of Haiti. Ed Link may have found one of the anchors of the ship Santa Maria, helmed by Columbus. At 16:30 sacks of cement are seen on the bottom of the ocean floor. At 18:00 Teddy Tucker is shown exploring wreckage near Bermuda’s Elbow Beach. At 19:00 Tucker is shown salvaging brass shell casings from the wreck. At 19:54 the cordite in the shells is burned off. At 20:12 spearfishing is shown.
