Released for the home market, this short, silent documentary film consists of newsreels showing the Pan American Clippers in their heydey, 1934-1939 including the Martin 130 China Clipper and the Giant Boeing 314 Clipper. Footage includes interior shots of the aircraft showing the fairly deluxe sleeping accommodations. At the 8 minute mark, footage of the ill-fated Samoa Clipper is shown.

The film ends with the Yankee Clipper, which set a NY to Marseilles record in 1938.

Samoan Clipper was one of ten Pan American Airways Sikorsky S-42 flying boats. It exploded near Pago Pago, American Samoa, on January 11, 1938, while piloted by famous aviator Ed Musick. Musick and his crew of six died in the crash. The aircraft was carrying only airmail and express freight; no passengers were aboard.

The aircraft developed an oil leak shortly after taking off from Pago Pago harbor, and the crew decided to return to port. However, the S-42, fully loaded with fuel, was too heavy to land safely in the limited space of the harbor, so the crew elected to dump fuel before landing. While fuel dumping was in progress, there was a fire and explosion which destroyed the aircraft, killing all aboard. The exact cause of ignition for the fire could not be determined.

The Boeing 314 Clipper was a long-range flying boat produced by the Boeing Airplane Company between 1938 and 1941. One of the largest aircraft of the time, it used the massive wing of Boeing’s earlier XB-15 bomber prototype to achieve the range necessary for flights across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Twelve Clippers were built; nine were brought into service for Pan Am and later transferred to the U.S. military. The remaining three were sold to British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) by Pan Am and delivered in early 1941. (BOAC’s 3 Short S.26 transoceanic flying-boats had been requisitioned by the RAF).

The Martin M-130 was a commercial flying boat designed and built in 1935 by the Glenn L. Martin Company in Baltimore, Maryland, for Pan American Airways. Three were built: the China Clipper, the Philippine Clipper and the Hawaii Clipper. A fourth flying boat (the M-156) called the Russian Clipper was built for the Soviet Union. It was similar to the M-130 but had a larger wing (giving it greater range) and twin vertical stabilizers.

Martin called them the Martin Ocean Transports, but to the public they were the “China Clippers”, a name that became a generic term for Pan Am’s large flying boats – the Martin M-130, Sikorsky S-42, and Boeing 314.
