21844 SOVIET UNION PROPAGANDA FILM ” OPERATION OCEAN ” 1970 USSR NAVY WARGAMES EXERCISE

Originally made by the Soviet Union, this propaganda film was re-released by the American C.I.A. complete with English narration. It features wargames known as Ocean-70 performed by the Soviet fleet. The exercise took place between 14th April and 5th of May 1970. It was conducted under the command of Admiral Gorshkov, commander in Chief of the Soviet Navy. Depicted are various types of the contemporary Soviet surface navy materiel, Soviet Navy airforce and air reconnaissance, Soviet Marines and their amphibious assault vehicles, and the first generation of the Soviet navy nuclear and non-nuclear submarines – November, Echo and Foxtrot types. The latest (commissioned 1968-1970) Soviet navy nuclear submarines do not appear in this movie. The classified part of this exercise involved the search for the sunken K-8 submarine, which foundered in the bay of Biscay on April 12th 1970 (not portrayed, understandably).
