21304 NIXON ERA CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS REPORT “AN ISLAND NATION” U.S. NAVY

This film opens with President Richard Nixon (:24) speaking on the SALT negotiations which was an acronym that stood for Strategic Arms Limitations Talks. John W. Warner (:54) states the United States is similar to an island in that it is surrounded on all sides by water. In 1941, the warship U.S.S Arizona (2:10) was attacked by Japan. “CNO SITREP 7” appears at (2:38) and this indicated a Chief of Naval Operations Report. The music for this film was performed by the US Navy Band (3:06). Admiral Elmo Russell Zumwalt Jr of the US Navy (3:25) discusses the Navy’s primary missions including sea control, projection of power and over seas presence, and he was the youngest man to serve as the Chief of Naval Operations. Admiral Bernard A. Clarey, Commander in Chief of the Navy is seen and a submarine surfacing follows (4:29). A rocket is launched from a submarine (4:56). Nixon is shown by the Great Wall of China and during his trips to Moscow to negotiate these treaties (5:42). Viewers are shown anti-submarine war air craft (6:56). Also of the Navy, is Rear Admiral G.H. Miller (7:43) and he divulges that they must import about 70% of their strategic materials (8:30). Footage of an aircraft carrier (9:55) is followed by Vice Admiral J.L. Holloway (9:55) as well as Rear Admiral O.H. Oberg (10:02) and Vice Admiral G.E. Miller (11:17). Miller speaks on how the US uses boats offshore from other countries to establish overseas presence (11:31). The 1960’s Polaris system (14:02) was replaced by the 1970’s Poseidon system (14:06) and during this film’s making, the navy was turning over to the Trident system (14:13).
