21254 1965 U.S. NAVY SUBMARINE TRAINING SCHOOL NEW LONDON CONNECTICUT PROMOTIONAL FILM

This 1965 color film takes its viewer on a tour of the U.S. Navy’s submarine training school at New London, Connecticut and includes includes a tour of the school’s library and museum (mark 03:00) and a look at submariner history including the H.L. Hunley, a Confederate sub used during the Civil War (mark 04:45). The film rolls on with a demonstration of their submarine simulator (mark 07:13) and various other simulators used to train officers and sailors. The USS Grouper (SS-214) is shown at mark 12:45, followed at mark 13:12 by the USS Benjamin Franklin (SSBN-640) a Polaris nuclear missile submarine. Recruits are shown being trained in the latest techniques of undersea warfare and technology as the film continues, and a submarine escape tower, a familiar site in New London, is discussed starting at mark 14:40 with rarely seen footage from inside the tank shown beginning at mark 15:05. The base’s Submarine Medical Center is visited at mark 21:09 and the narrator outlines the important role medical officers play aboard subs, especially nuclear-powered examples. Graduation day at the school plays out tarting at mark 24:24 as learn the graduates continue to receive additional training and on-the-job instruction even after leaving New London. The narrator offers a summation of some of a submarine officers duties at mark 25:40 as we see the USS Piper (SS-409) head out to sea, and learn a little about the role of the submarine in World War II before once more seeing the Benjamin Franklin, a “power for peace” utilized by the Navy.
