2037z WWII GERMAN U-BOATS ON PATROL BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC GERMAN NEWSREEL Print 3

This silent, historic German film produced during WWII by UFA is titled “U-boats on patrol”. It shows U-boats operating in Wolfpacks, hunting Allied convoys during the Battle of the Atlantic. At the start of the film at :25, a Type IX U-boat is seen preparing to go on a mission. A band :39 plays as the submarine comes to port for a deployment ceremony. At :14 multiple U-boats head out to sea and the watch is manned. At 1:28 an Allied convoy is spotted and the boat crash dives (1:42) for combat. AT 1:56 an enemy patrol craft comes over the submerged submarine. At 2:19 the submarine surfaces, having escaped its adversary. At 2:40 the deck gun is used to destroy an Allied ship which was outside the convoy. At 3:22 the sub is in heavy seas. At 3:23, an officer uses a 16mm or 36mm motion picture camera (probably an Arriflex type) to film. At 3:30 the watch continues on deck, looking for targets. At 4:35 the alert sounds and the crew races from their bunks and the U-boat dives again. At 5:29 the captain looks through the periscope and torpedoes are fired. The track of the torpedoes is timed using a stopwatch. At 5:46 a merchant vessel — appears to be a freighter — is hit. At 6:06 the ship sinks to Davey Jones. At 6:30 the U-boat is in heavy weather, on its way back to base, mission accomplished.
