19874 1940s VINTAGE HAWAII FOOTAGE (SILENT) SURFING SUGAR & PINEAPPLE FARMS HONOLULU MAUI OAHU

This reel of gorgeous color footage from 1940s Hawaii was made for sale to visiting tourists at shops in Honolulu. Each 100′ roll of film, running about 3-4 minutes, presented a different aspect of the magic isles. First is “Pineapple and Sugar Industries of Hawaii” (:29), showing the rich agriculture that supported the territory’s economy. At :50 crops are burned to prepare the soil. At 1:03 loads of sugar cane are removed from the field and processed at 1:15. At 2:00 pineapples are harvested in fields by laborers wearing hats to shield them from the sun. At 3:01 the pineapples enter a sorting machine where they are then processed for canning (3:23). At 3:56 they are shipped all over the world. At 4:00 is the second film, “Maui the Valley Isle” showcasing various sights on the island. The film closes at 7:26 with a spectacular sunset. At 7:32 is a film about Oahu, with shots of Honolulu and Waikiki Beach. This begins at 7:40 with shots of a Pearl Harbor’s cemetery. At 7:50 an ocean liner, probably SS Lurline, is shown arriving in port while at 8:00 visitors arrive on a United Airlines DC-3 airplane. At 8:13 the Aloha Tower is shown and at 8:44 the famed statue of King Kamehameha. At 9:37 local fishermen show off their catch while at 9:50 is extensive footage of surfing. At 10:03 are shots of the blow hole and at 10:15 Waikiki Beach and more surfing as well as catamarans and canoes.

At 11:03 “Surfing Thrills at Waikiki” is a delightful look at the art of surfing as it existed in the early post-WWII era.
